Troubleshooting

Troubleshooting

Start with pieeg-server doctor. It checks SPI, GPIO, Python packages and your settings in one go.

Power and hardware

ProblemFix
Status LED on the shield is offCheck the power bank is on and the shield is fully seated on all 40 pins.
Jetson shuts down or restartsThe power bank can't supply enough current. Use a 5 V / 3 A bank and a short, thick cable. Keep the Jetson in its 5 W power mode (sudo nvpmodel -m 1) when running from a power bank.
Shield is off by one pinShut down, remove and re-seat it. Pin 1 of the shield must match pin 1 of the header.

SPI and GPIO

ProblemFix
/dev/spidev0.0 not foundSPI is off. Run sudo /opt/nvidia/jetson-io/jetson-io.py → Configure 40-pin header → enable spi1 → Save and reboot.
Permission denied on SPI or GPIOsudo groupadd -f spi && sudo usermod -aG spi, gpio "$USER", then log out and in again.
PiEEG Server: no samples arriveThe DRDY line offset may differ on your JetPack release. Check with gpioinfo gpiochip0 (after sudo apt install -y gpiod) and pass --gpio-chip /dev/gpiochip0.
Python script: Jetson.GPIO errorsRun as a user in the gpio group, or with sudo. Jetson.GPIO comes with JetPack.

PiEEG Server

ProblemFix
pip can't install pieeg-serverIt needs Python 3.10+. JetPack 4 ships Python 3.6. Install a newer Python first, or use the Python scripts.
Dashboard shows 16 channelsStart with --device jneeg.
Can't open the dashboard from a laptopUse http://<jetson-ip>:1617 and check both are on the same network.

Signal

ProblemFix
All channels noisy at onceCheck the reference and bias ear clips first. Clean the earlobes and clip them firmly.
One channel flat or very largeThat electrode isn't touching the skin. Part the hair, press it in, or add gel.
Strong 50/60 Hz humSomething is on mains power. Unplug every charger, run the monitor from the battery, move away from power strips.
Noise from the fanKeep electrode cables away from the Jetson's fan and heatsink.
Big slow spikes on the front channelsBlinks and eye movements. Ask the person to keep the eyes still or closed.
Bursts of high-frequency noiseJaw, face or neck muscles. Relax the face, don't talk or chew.

Is it the board or the setup? Set all channels to input-shorted (CHnSET = 0x01). If the signal stays within a few µV, the hardware is fine. See Noise elimination.
