Firmware

The NUCLEO-WB55 needs two things before it works with MicroBCI: the Bluetooth stack (for the STM32WB's radio core) and the MicroBCI firmware. You flash both once, over USB, with no extra programmer: the Nucleo has an ST-LINK built in.

⚠️

Flash with no electrodes on anyone. The board is connected to a computer while flashing.

Connect the Nucleo

Plug the Micro-USB cable into the Nucleo's ST-LINK USB port (the right-hand USB port) and into the computer.

Connect in STM32CubeProgrammer

  1. Open STM32CubeProgrammer. The ST-LINK should be recognised. If it isn't, install or update the ST-LINK driver.
  2. Set the port to SWD.
  3. Select ST-LINK as the programmer.
  4. Click Connect.

Install the Bluetooth stack

  1. Open the Firmware Upgrade Services (FUS) panel.
  2. Click Read FUS infos.
  3. Check the FUS version is v1.2.0.0 or v1.3.0.0.
  4. Check the board reports a stack version (not 0.0.0.0).
  5. Browse to stm32wb5x_BLE_Stack_full_fw.bin.
  6. Set the start address to 0x080CE000 and click Firmware Upgrade.
🚫

Use exactly address 0x080CE000 for this stack file. A wrong address can leave the radio unusable.

Upload the MicroBCI firmware

  1. Go back to the main programming view and make sure the board is connected.
  2. Open Micro_BCI.hex.
  3. Click Download to write it to the board.

Unplug and test

Unplug the USB cable. Mount the shield, power the board from the power bank, and connect with the Python SDK or the app.
